HID Global’s OMNIKEY 1021 desktop smart-card readers have greatly simplified the process of issuing SIM cards to China Unicom customers, while simultaneously improving the efficiency of frontline customer-service staff. China Unicom has installed the smart-card readers at its stores in more than 20 provinces and cities across the country.

The readers have eliminated the need for mobile number configuration, as customer service staff are now able to personalize a blank SIM card with a mobile number on the spot. This has helped to reduce SIM card inventory levels by between 8 and 10 million units per quarter. In addition, popular applications can be embedded into SIM cards before they are issued, improving customer satisfaction.

“Desktop smart-card readers are the management tool that telecommunications operators will heavily invest in,” says Gu Dingming, China Unicom’s business supervisor. “As our operations and customers span across the country, we needed a system that offered a high level of compatibility along with reliable quality and ease of use.”

HID’s OMNIKEY 1021 desktop smart-card reader is the ideal product to support the growth of China Unicom’s personalization services. Thanks to its robust data transmission speeds, the reader can quickly upload large amounts of data to SIM cards, which enables China Unicom to develop a series of personalized SIM card applications.

“We are pleased that China Unicom has selected HID Global as its desktop smart-card reader supplier to address its growing demands for speedy frontline operations and personalized service,” says Tim Phipps, HID Global’s vice president of logical access in Asia Pacific.
