ARX access control system keeps amusement park safe and secure

Safety is a top priority at the Gröna Lund amusement park in Stockholm, Sweden; accidents are out of the question. Effective perimeter security is essential. Yet, at the same time, 1,300 seasonal employees need to have access to the area during a limited period of time.

At Gröna Lund amusement park in Stockholm Sweden, ARX access control system from ASSA ABLOY’s Group company ASSA allows seasonal employees gain access to the amusement park area with their Gröna Lund access card. Personal authorization is programmed right into the card from the time that the summer job begins. When the job comes to an end, the card no longer works.

“We really needed a versatile lock system to work on many levels,” says Gröna Lund Facilities Services Manager Björn Österblom. He wanted an access system for the park, higher-level keyed locks for places where various kinds of valuables are stored, and lower-level keyed locks for games and attractions.

When Österblom visited ASSA's website, he found that the solutions recommended for industries would also be appropriate for Gröna Lund. “We find it advantageous to work with a major player, capable of providing reliable service. And just like Gröna Lund, ASSA is a strong brand. ASSA’s planners helped us and Axlås-Solidlås installed the system.”

The new system offers the advantage of secure, easy access for seasonal employees. A full-time staff of 80 people and about 1,300 seasonal employees work on the amusement park grounds. And a number of contractors also need access to the grounds at various times. Seasonal employees use the cards to gain access to their locker rooms. They can then use the same cards to check out the keys for the games, rides, or food stands they operate. At the end of the day, the keys are returned. Should someone lose a card, which also provides identification for time records and cash handling, it can easily be deprogrammed.

Gröna Lund intends to develop the access system further and minimize key use by employees. Checking out keys will soon be redundant. Instead, employees will have authorization to their respective workstations programmed right into their cards. Obviously, the aim is to create a simple and secure access control system. “Everyone is extremely pleased so far,” Österblom says. “The people at Artist Services, who administer the system, are thrilled. It’s easy to program and it works really well.”

Gröna Lund opened in 1883. It is one of the few remaining urban amusement parks from the nineteenth century. The carnival area was originally much smaller, housed in a dusty courtyard.
